Port Louis, the cosmopolitan capital of Mauritius was founded in 1735 by the French governor Bertrand-François Mahe of La Bourdonnais. The latter was a great builder and pioneer in the field of trade in the Indian Ocean. Located on the northwest coast of Mauritius, Port Louis is primarily the business and administrative center of the island.
